Close to 300 people have died, while more than three million others have been affected after tropical storm "Ondoy" (Ketsana) wrought havoc in metropolitan Manila and some provinces in Calabarzon and Central Luzon regions.
The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) said Friday afternoon that the number of fatalities had risen to 293 or 136 deaths in Metro Manila; 104 in Region IV-A or Calabarzon area; 50 in Region III or in Central Luzon; and three in the Cordillera Administrative Region.
Forty-two people were reported missing, while the number of injured individuals remained at five. A total of 629, 466 families or 3,084,997 people were affected in 1,368 barangays (villages). They are temporarily sheltered in more than 500 evacuation centers.
Damage to property caused by the storm has reached at least P5.1 billion or P1.9 billion to infrastructure including 4, 270 houses totally destroyed and 5,933 houses partially destroyed, and P3.2 billion to agriculture.
“Ondoy" brought rains of 341 millimeters (mm) in the first six hours that it struck Metro Manila last Saturday, Sept. 26, breaking the highest 24-hour rainfall of 334 mm in metropolitan Manila in June 1967.
Water areas in portions Metro Manila, Central Luzon and Calabarzon remain submerged in flood waters as of this posting. The water level is expected to rise, threatening to aggravate the situation once Typhoon “Pepeng" makes landfall Saturday evening in Northern Cagayan. - AIE BALAGTAS SEE, GMANews.TV
