High-flying Baguio tows Ginebra to victory past BK

Cyrus Baguio continues to bail Barangay Ginebra out of trouble this time helping the Gin Kings win an out-of-town match near the former University of Santo Tomas (UST) King Tiger’s hometown.

The 6-foot-2 swingman ended his 15-point performance with a clutch triple as the Kings completed an 83-79 win over the Burger King Whopper in Saturday night’s KFC-Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Mindanao Civic Center in Tubod, Lanao Del Norte.

The shot gave Ginebra an 81-74 cushion that proved enough to finally quell the threat of a BK crew that gave up one big fight despite falling behind by 16 points.

Baguio’s triple ended a Burger King rally that saw the Whopper came back from a 16-point deficit. He also had five rebounds and three assists while Enrico Villanueva paced the Kings with 16 points.

The Iligan City native Baguio actually came off the bench late in the first quarter with his buzzer-beating three-pointer ending a 13-5 Ginebra run as the Kings posted a 27-18 lead entering the second period.

Baguio scored six more in the second, highlighted by a breakaway two-handed reverse dunk off his own steal and issuing an assist to Villanueva before Eric Menk ended it with a baseline jumper as the Kings enjoy a 49-33 spread.

Ginebra hotshot Jayjay Helterbrand, who missed the team’s last two games due to a knee injury, returned in the Kings’ line up but only managed to score six points, grab one rebound and issued one assist in 23 minutes of action.

Burger King, however, would not go down without a fight and used a 26-8 third quarter exchange to briefly enjoy a 62-57 lead with 8:16 left in the final canto.

Ginebra, however, still had some gas left in its tank for one final push.

“We lost the flow, both on offense and defense, in the second half and I really don’t know why," admitted Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. “Good thing Cyrus came up with the shot that bailed us out." – GMANews.TV
