8 suspected robbers killed in Quezon shootout

(Updated 1:17 PM) Eight suspected robbers were killed after engaging police in a shootout in Quezon province before dawn on Monday.

The men, riding a Hi-Ace van, sped past a checkpoint along Maharlika Highway in Bukal Sur village in Candelaria town, Quezon, Radio dwIZ reported.

Quezon provincial police chief Senior Superintendent Francis Elmo Sarona said local law enforcers were in charge of a checkpoint to enforce a nationwide gun ban and flagged down the van.

A separate report on dzBB radio said the incident occurred a little past 5:10 a.m., when police chased the suspects, who sped past the checkpoint.

Sarona said the men had fired at the pursuing policemen, prompting the lawmen to retaliate.
